Take a minute to research before adopting or purchasing your new pet. Turtle, Dog, Rat, Bunny, or otherwise. It's important that you know what to expect BEFORE bringing your pet home. I'm a tried and true animal lover. I currently share my home with two Red Eared Sliders, one Red Bellied Newt, three dogs, three rats, and a multitude of fresh and marine fish.

In the Summer of 2001 we adopted two four year old female Red Eared Sliders. I'd never had turtles before, and had heard many rumors about the mess they create, how difficult they are, and how frustrating they could be as pets. However, these two needed a new family... and I just couldn't say no.

To this day, my Turtles have been one of my favorite pets ever. They are just a blast to watch. They have so much personality. And their upkeep isn't nearly as bad as what the rumors state. The key thing is to make sure you have adequate filtration, and enough aquatic and land space. Tama Chan and Tsunami live in a large indoor pond in our den, and have started a love affair for our entire family. Damon loves them and would like more turtles, my parents love them and even adopted two of their own, the dogs even love to sit and watch them swim. They really have been a great addition to our family.

Without further ado,
I'd like to introduce you to:

Let's play a little game, can you find the turtle in the pond?

Answer is at the bottom of the page.

Doing one of their favorite things... just hanging out.
A Turtle doing one of their favorite things... just hanging out.

Saying Hello
One of the girls, coming up to say "Hi Mom!"

Since setting up the pond we've only made one change. We've added a sand bed on the bottom, as well as on the land areas all around the pond. It just looks a whole lot prettier and makes the turtles and fish stand out better.

Need help telling the girls apart? Tama Chan's shell is brighter and smaller, Tsunami has an old scar on her shell, and has a shorter tail.
Need help telling the girls apart? Tama Chan's shell is brighter and more rounded, and she's got a pointier tail. Tsunami has an old scar on her shell, and has a shorter rounder tail. Tsunami is also slightly larger than Tama Chan.

Personality wise? Tama Chan likes being held, but Tsunami is always the first to greet me.
Can you tell who this is? Need help? Look at the tail (is it rounded and stubby, or does it have a triangular shape?) Looks short and round to me. :) Must be Tsunami.

a nice photograph that shows how the sun comes in and catches the pond ripples
I just thought this was a nice shot of the sunlight hitting the water

Bobbing along, bobbing along on the bottom of the beautiful briney sea. What a chance to get a better peep, at the plants and creatures of the deep... we glide... far below the rolling tide...
"Bobbing along, bobbing along on the bottom of the beautiful briney sea. What a chance, to get a better peep, at the plants and creatures of the deep. We glide... far below the rolling tide..." Okay, so this isn't "Bedknobs and Broomsticks", but close enough.

Just having a lazy afternoon, swimming along through the pond

Well... Did you find the turtle in the first photograph?
If not, here she is:
