The Zip Lead
from Planet Dog

As a trainer, I often caution my clients away from retractable leads.  As they're always kept tight, dogs are unable to gain loose leash walking skills.  They promote the desire to pull, and add to the problem of poorly or untrained dogs.  That said...

There is a time and a place for a retractable leash.  Personally, I like using them at dog shows, when I'm exercising client dogs.  They're also handy when working on "go outs" with well trained dogs when you are in an area where off leash dogs are prohibited.  Thus, I was curious to check out the new Zip Lead from Planet Dog.

I've never found a retractable lead I enjoyed using.  They are clunky, uncomfortable, and awkward in the hand.  I have small hands and equally small stubby fingers which only adds to the discomfort of the common retractable leash.  The new Zip Lead is fabulous for this particular reason; it fits easily in the hand.  The wrist strap is very comfortable, padded, and doesn't chafe.  I have to say, it's about time a company thought about the humans using holding the leash.

I tested the small size Zip Lead, which is meant for a dog up to 20 pounds.  I really wanted to give it a run for the money, so I tested it with a 45 pound dog who I directed to pull.  Not once did the hardware give way.  While I wouldn't recommend using this product for anything but the recommended size - it was wonderful to see that it was made so durably.

As with any retractable leash, it's best to keep it away from strollers or small children.  If the cord piece were to pull out or retract while in contact with skin, it could be very painful and inflict a nasty "owie".

Over all?  This is the first retractable to ever gain my approval and happy usage.  If you feel the need to use a retractable lead, this is the one you should seek out.  Planet Dog's Zip Lead is easily the best on the market.
