I am currently working on two book projects, with a couple others still rattling around in my brain. The first is a pocket reference guide to the toy breeds, and the second is a beginners guide to clicker training. I feel that both are important projects, and offer something that is not currently on the market.
Toy breed dogs have special needs not usually taken into consideration by general dog information books. Their small size, and large personalities, really set them up as a group all their own. While being written in a format aimed at creating one book, this project could easily be recreated as a series on toy breed dogs - with each book focusing on a different breed. This project will include at a glance guides on each of the toy breed dogs recognized by the CKC, the AKC, and the UKC. Information on training your toy breed dog. The best places to purchase your new family member. Sections on diet, exercise, and proper care. As well as information covering equipment that is specific to the toy breeds (such as carriers, and litter boxes). The reference guide to toy breed dogs could be published as either a soft cover pocket book, or a large hard cover coffee table book. Publishers: If you are interested in receiving a copy of the information packet, including a query, my qualifications, and sample chapters, please feel free to contact me at writer@noselicks.com.
All of the clicker books currently on the market assume that their readers already understand the concepts of conditioning, and are familiar with dog training lingo. I'm determined to remove that language barrier. I think it's important that all people are given the opportunity to share the bond that clicker training can create between themselves and their pets. This manuscript is being written as individual lesson plans, including estimated time to train each cue. Starting with the basics, what a clicker is, what kind of treats to use, and how clicker training works. Continuing to the introduction of advanced concepts using language everyone can understand, setting my readers up for success. Ending with the tools they will need should they decide to continue their operant conditioning education. Right from teaching your dog what the click means, to teaching sit, down, come, place, and how to politely walk on a leash. The lessons are easy to understand, and appropriate for anyone from five years old to 100 years old. It is my hope that parents will take the time to learn with their children. Clicker training is a wonderful tool, and can build up the confidence of both the person clicking, and the pet being clicked. I have clicked with pets, Assistance Dogs, show dogs, and rescued animals. Clicker training works, and results in pets who love to learn and who are eager to spend time with their people. "Clicker Training for Everyone" is currently scheduled for release by Kennel Club Books either in late 2006 or early 2007. Keep watching this space for more information on this, and other, upcoming titles by little ole me.
Other projects rumbling around in the back of my mind include: A children's picture book following the adventures of Thunder, a retired racing Greyhound. This book would be aimed at children between six and ten. Follow Thunder throughout his life. From his birth in a racing kennel, to his life on the track, following him through the adoption process, how he ended up finding his forever family, and his adventures as an Assistance dog. A series of picture books on choosing and caring for your first pet. From rabbits, to iguanas, to budgies, and back again. This series would be aimed at children between four and seven, and will discuss the needs of different animals, and how to pick the right pet for your family.
